Abstract:
Introduction: Mothers with ineffective breast feeding techniques cease breastfeeding earlier
and interferes with exclusive breast feeding; which ultimately result in a serious of acute
infectious diseases like diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, and chronic diseases. Despite the
fact that ineffective breast feeding technique have a significant impact on a child's health and
survival, research in this area was scarce. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of
assessing breastfeeding technique and associated factors among primi-para mothers.
Objective: To assess breast feeding techniques and associated factors among primi-para mothers
in Basona Werana district, North Shewa, Ethiopia,2022.
Methods: Community based cross-sectional study was conducted from June 20-July 19, 2022. A
total of 415 study participants were recruited. The sample size was calculated by using single
population proportion formula. Cluster sampling technique was used by considering those
kebeles in Basona werana district as a cluster. A structured interviewer-administered
questionnaire and an observational check list were used to collect the data. The data was entered
using Epi-data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. Binary logistic were
performed to identify independent predictors.
Result: The proportion of effective breast feeding technique was 166(46.2%) (95%CI
(0.410,0.515)). Maternal educational status (AOR 4.45; 95% CI (1.45,13.64)), Age of the mother
(AOR 4.98; 95% CI (1.65,14.92)) and (AOR 4.78; 95% CI (1.61,14.25)), age of the baby (AOR
2.48; 95% CI (1.03,5.94)). counseling during ante natal care follow-up (AOR 3.47; 95% CI
(1.67,7.21)) and immediate skin-to-skin contact with their newborns after birth (AOR 3.54; 95%
CI (1.53,8.18)) were significantly associated with breastfeeding technique.
Conclusion: In this study, the proportion of effective breast feeding technique was low. Age of
the mother, mother’s educational status, age of the baby, Skin to skin contact and counselling
during ante natal care were independent predictor of breast feeding technique.
Recommendation: Promote women's education, working on increasing ante natal care
counseling about breastfeeding technique and increase immediate skin to skin contact after
delivery.
