natural phenomenon that occurs throughout the reproductive years of every woman. Most
females experience some degree of pain and discomfort during their menstrual periods which
could have significant impacts on their daily activities and disturb their productivity. The risk
factors for dysmenorrhea have not been well documented in our study area Therefore, this study
aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of dysmenorrhea among government secondary
school students.
Objective: To determinants the prevalence and identify factors of dysmenorrhea among
government secondary school students in Bole sub city, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,2022.
Method: Institutional based cross-sectional study was done. In this study (ayer amba, bole
mesenado and bole bulbula government secondary public schools) was selected by lottery
methods from the total 6 government secondary public schools. Then takes 440 samples from
selected schools by simple random sampling technique, the data was collected using self administered questionnaire then entered into SPSS for analysis. Bivariate and multivariable
logistic regressions analysis with Odds Ratio and P-value ≤0.05 was applied to examine the
strength and significance of association between dependent and independent variables.
Result: The Prevalence of dysmenorrhea among students aged 13-20 years 269(66.1%) and
Majority 214(48.6%) of the respondents experienced their periods per month regularly,
311(70.7%) had a relative with dysmenorrhea, 407 (92.5%) female students consumed sugar
while 249(56.6%) consumed sugar in tea.
Conclusion: - The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was high which was influenced by family history
of dysmenorrhea, regularity of menstrual period, length of menstruation, stress and consumption
of sugar. The high prevalence of dysmenorrhea among students requires health education about
it, its causes, management, and schools to stock analgesics in the school clinics.
